Adding Unlike Fractions with the LCD

See why unlike fractions need equal-sized parts before their numerators can be added.

Fractions with different denominators describe parts of different sizes. Before adding them, rewrite both with the least common denominator.

Example: 1/4 + 1/6

The LCD of 4 and 6 is 12. Convert 1/4 to 3/12 and 1/6 to 2/12. Now add the numerators: 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12.

The unlike-fraction addition calculator provides a fast result. The step-by-step addition calculator separates all six instructional stages.
